National Security Council established in Germany

In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the creation of a new National Security Council that will coordinate high-level consultations on defense and security issues, APA reports, citing Euractiv.

It was reported that German officials describe the newly created body as the "new core of Germany's security architecture." The council combines two bodies - the German Federal Security Council, which is responsible for defense and security policy, and the Security Cabinet, which meets to make decisions in crisis situations.

Merz said that the council will deal with "cross-cutting issues" related to national security, which is at the intersection of domestic, foreign, economic and digital security, in addition to long-term planning of the country's "comprehensive security policy."

According to him, threats to European security from Russia and other countries require more agile decision-making and response.
