European Commission: Georgia's EU accession process has stalled

Georgia's accession process to the European Union (EU) has effectively stalled, APA's local bureau reports, citing a press release by the European Commission.

The European Commission has called on the Georgian government to change its political course and return to the path of EU accession.

"The European Commission considers Georgia to be a member state only nominally. Since 2024, the situation in the country has deteriorated sharply, with a serious democratic backsliding accompanied by a rapid erosion of the rule of law and serious restrictions on fundamental rights," the report says.

Note that the Georgian government announced on November 28 last year that it would not bring EU membership negotiations to the agenda until 2028.
