NATO strengthens presence in Baltic Sea amid Russian sabotage

Against the backdrop of Russia's continued attacks on critical underwater infrastructure, NATO member states have begun to take measures to strengthen their fleets and military presence in the Baltic Sea, APA reports, citing The Economist.

According to the report, the Baltic Sea is gradually becoming a zone of active confrontation between NATO and Russia. In particular, since 2023, at least 11 sabotage incidents have been recorded on communication lines running along the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

The Pentagon and intelligence agencies of European countries attribute these incidents to the Russian "shadow fleet".

The most damaged objects were cables and pipelines. It is believed that they were damaged as a result of ships from the Russian "shadow fleet" dragging their anchors along the seabed. In addition, in October, Russian warships simulated collisions with Danish ships and pointed weapons at them.

It is reported that this is precisely why the Polish government has decided to purchase three Swedish-made A-26 submarines. These submarines, which will be purchased for 2.8 billion US dollars, are specially designed for the murky and shallow waters of the Baltic Sea.
