For now, talking to Al Jazeera, Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, is simply saying that the sides have agreed to hold a second round of talks, but the date is not set yet, APA reports.
However, he said Tehran and Washington believe it must be held soon. “Soon” is a critical word because there are concerns in Iran that, if these talks drag on, they could be hijacked either by hardline elements in Iran or, in Washington, by the influence of the Israeli lobby.
When asked [by our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic] about the possibility of the war with the US, he said the possibility always exists, but Iran is ready for both peace and war.
One of the critical statements from him was the one that reassured the region. He said we are telling the Americans and the regional countries that we are going to target the American forces stationed in the region [in case of a US attack], not the regional countries – and there is a difference between that.
Also, he once again emphasised the trust issue between the two parties. He said there is a long way to go to build trust, because of last year’s war.
