Italy investigating possible sabotage to rail network near Bologna

Italian police are investigating possible sabotage after electricity cables feeding rail lines were damaged near the northern Italian city of Bologna, causing delays to train traffic, an official said, APA reports, citing Al Arabiya.

Italy’s state-owned railway Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) said the problem with the lines, which came on the first full day of the Winter Olympic Games, had not been caused by any technical failure.

The incident disrupted one of the country’s busiest rail hubs on lines between Bologna and Milan, and Bologna and Venice, causing delays of up to 90 minutes for high-speed, Intercity and regional services.

Milan is a co-host for the Winter Games alongside Cortina, which is reachable via rail links from Venice.

At the 2024 Summer Olympic Games staged in Paris, saboteurs struck France’s TGV high-speed train network in a series of pre-dawn attacks across the country, causing travel chaos ahead of the opening ceremony.
