The first meeting of a joint working group to study the causes of the declining water level of the Caspian Sea will be held within the framework of the Regional Environmental Summit to be held in Astana, the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Azerbaijan, told APA.
This was stated during a meeting between Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Alim Bayel and Mukhtar Babayev, Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues.
During the meeting, it was emphasized that Azerbaijan supports the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan to establish an international water organization.
The sides also discussed the environmental agenda, protection of the Caspian Sea ecosystem, preparations for upcoming joint events, and issues of mutual support for international initiatives in the field of environmental protection.
Alim Bayel once again invited the Azerbaijani side to actively participate in the Regional Environmental Summit to be held in Astana on April 22–24, 2026. Within the framework of the Summit, the first meeting of a joint working group to study the causes of the declining water level of the Caspian Sea will be held. The parties expressed hope that the meeting would become an important step toward establishing a unified regional environmental security system in the Caspian Sea basin.
Ambassador A. Bayel also informed his interlocutor about the initiative of President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to establish a full-fledged water organization within the UN system. M. Babayev stated that Azerbaijan would fully support this initiative of the Kazakh leader and considers it highly relevant in the context of accumulated challenges in water resource management amid global climate issues. According to the Representative of the President of Azerbaijan, water-related problems today are not only environmental in nature but also directly affect security and economic issues, making the establishment of such an organization a timely step.
M. Babayev emphasized that the synergy of efforts between Astana and Baku in environmental protection and climate issues not only serves the national interests of both countries but also contributes significantly to the sustainable development of the entire Caspian region. Overall, the interlocutors highly appreciated the dynamic development of Kazakhstan–Azerbaijan relations and reaffirmed their mutual interest in further strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the field of ecology.
