A total of 132 cultural heritage sites in Iran have been directly and indirectly damaged, suffering serious destruction, said Secretary of Iran’s National Commission for UNESCO, Hassan Fartousi, at a press conference, APA’s Tehran bureau reports.

According to him, the monuments damaged during the war include the Golestan Palace in Tehran, the Chehel Sotoun Palace in Isfahan, and several other complexes, which are included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List and are not only significant for Iran.

Hassan Fartousi noted that the Falak-ol-Aflak Castle, located in Lorestan province, which is being prepared for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List, has also been damaged.

He stressed that reports on the damaged monuments will be prepared in both written and visual formats and submitted to the UNESCO commission.

Hassan Fartousi said that universities in Iran have also suffered serious damage as a result of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, with 149 cases recorded.

Fartousi added that countries in the region must ensure the implementation of the Hague Convention, under which cultural heritage must be protected during armed conflicts.
