Pashinyan’s party proposes replacing Catholicos, signals possible EU membership bid

A plan to replace the Catholicos has been included in the election program of the “Civil Contract” party led by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, APA reports.

According to the document published on the Prime Minister’s Facebook page, a phased reform in the Armenian Church is proposed – the removal of the current Catholicos, the election of an interim leader, the adoption of a new charter, and then the election of a new head of the Church.

At the same time, the ruling party’s program also notes the possibility of applying for membership in the European Union.

In addition, the document emphasizes the intention to pursue a balanced foreign policy course.
