The first round of political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of Gambia was held on April 7 in Banjul, the capital of Gambia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.
According to the ministry, before the consultations, a delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev held a courtesy meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President of Gambia, Mr. Aliu L. Sanyang. During the meeting, satisfaction was expressed with the friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Gambia based on mutual respect and solidarity.
The importance of strengthening existing cooperation and identifying new areas of collaboration in fields of mutual interest for both countries was highlighted.
The parties emphasized that the first round of political consultations serves as an important platform for strengthening diplomatic ties and exploring new opportunities for cooperation.
Later, the first round of political consultations was held under the co-chairmanship of Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev and Permanent Secretary I and Head of the Diplomatic Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of Gambia, Lang Yabou.
During the consultations, the importance of making more effective use of existing opportunities for the development of bilateral relations was emphasized, and the need to take relevant steps in areas such as economy, trade, education, tourism, energy, and combating climate change was noted. At the same time, Azerbaijan’s contributions to the development of human capital in Gambia and successfully implemented humanitarian projects were welcomed, and interest was expressed in continuing cooperation in this direction.
The parties highly appreciated cooperation within multilateral platforms, especially within the UN, the OIC, and the Non-Aligned Movement, and stressed the need to further expand relations in this direction.
On the same day, the Azerbaijani delegation met with the Mayor of Banjul, Ms. Rohey Malick Lowe. During the meeting, issues related to the World Urban Forum to be hosted by Azerbaijan and possible areas of cooperation in the humanitarian sphere were discussed.
