A meeting of the State Commission on Climate Change was held today, the Cabinet of Ministers told APA.
Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Commission Samir Sharifov opened the meeting and stated that Azerbaijan began actively participating in the joint fight against global climate challenges by joining the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1995.
In the subsequent period, remaining committed to its obligations under the Paris Agreement, the country has set more ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and identified a 40 percent reduction in emissions by 2035 compared to 1990 as a key priority in its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document. This approach demonstrates that Azerbaijan is pursuing a consistent policy toward transitioning to a low-carbon development model and minimizing the impacts of climate change.
It was noted that the COP29 conference held in Baku on November 11–22, 2024, was remembered for important and historic decisions on many pending issues.
At the end of the meeting, decisions were adopted by Chairman of the State Commission Samir Sharifov to prepare and submit to the Commission in a short period an action plan related to preparations for the upcoming 31st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as to establish an interagency working group to improve the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the draft Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On Climate,” and the “Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy” projects.
