Two people were injured in shooting near the White House

At least two people were injured on Monday, May 4, in a shooting near the White House, Deputy Director of the U.S. Secret Service Matthew Quinn announced this at a press conference later that day, APA reports.

According to him, at approximately 3:30 PM local time, plainclothes Secret Service officers observed a firearm on a passerby on the National Mall—a central Washington boulevard about a five-minute walk from the White House. Upon making contact, the unidentified individual attempted to flee and began firing at law enforcement, who returned fire. "That individual was injured and is in the hospital," Quinn said, declining to disclose the shooter's condition.

Additionally, the Deputy Director of the Secret Service clarified that a minor nearby was injured in the shooting. His life is not in danger and he is undergoing evaluation at a hospital. Quinn also noted that Vice President J.D. Vance's motorcade had passed through the area shortly before the incident. Earlier, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told X that the incident occurred at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue.
