Bayramov and Kallas review state of Azerbaijan–EU relations - UPDATED-1

On May 5, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas, who is visiting the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.

During one-on-one and expanded meetings between the parties, the current state and prospects of Azerbaijan–EU relations were thoroughly reviewed.

The intensity of political dialogue and the importance of high-level mutual visits were emphasized, and the importance of developing the partnership on the basis of mutual respect, equality and shared interests was noted. At the same time, the importance of dialogue mechanisms between Azerbaijan and Europe, the resumption of negotiations on a new bilateral agreement, and the ongoing discussions on the Partnership Priorities document were highlighted.

During the meeting, opportunities for expanding cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, energy security, transport and logistics, green energy and digitalization were discussed. Azerbaijan’s contribution to Europe’s energy security and its role as a reliable partner were noted.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the other side about the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period, the restoration and reconstruction work carried out by Azerbaijan, as well as measures taken to combat the mine threat. An exchange of views was held on the normalization process with Armenia. Azerbaijan’s commitment to ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region was once again emphasized.

The parties also exchanged views on regional and international security issues. In this context, cooperation within multilateral platforms, as well as opportunities for joint action against global challenges, were discussed.

During the meeting, prospects for the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU within the framework of various institutions and programs were also reviewed.

The parties also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.

An expanded meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov and Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice President of the European Commission, Azerbaijan MFA stated on X account, APA reports.

The sides had a comprehensive discussions covering the full scope of 🇦🇿– 🇪🇺 relations, including political dialogue, legal and institutional cooperation, and prospects for further development of the bilateral partnership agenda.

Particular emphasis was placed on energy cooperation, including Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable supplier contributing to Europe’s energy security, as well as collaboration in renewable energy.

The meeting also addressed trade and investment, economic diversification, digitalization, innovation, and industrial cooperation, alongside transport and logistics connectivity, notably the development of the Middle Corridor and regional infrastructure projects.

The sides discussed regional and international security issues, including post-conflict developments, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, humanitarian demining, and ongoing normalization efforts in the South Caucasus, stressing the importance of achieving sustainable peace and stability.
