President Ilham Aliyev: At that time, Armenia wanted to include provision on Karabakh in the peace agreement-VIDEO

"When the Second Karabakh War ended, a gap, a vacuum, appeared in the field of future relations and contacts between Armenia and Azerbaijan," President Ilham Aliyev said in an interview with the media regarding the results of his visit to the United States, APA reports.

The head of state said that at that time the OSCE Minsk Group, which still wanted to operate, was almost paralyzed:

“Because they also did not know what to do. Because Azerbaijan had resolved all the issues within the framework of international law. The Karabakh conflict, the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict, had been resolved through military and political means. It was then that Azerbaijan revealed its vision for the future. That is, this gap cannot last long. There must be a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

We were the initiators of it. After we put forward that initiative, there was still no response from anywhere. Then we put forward the known 5 main principles and we prepared the text of the peace treaty based on them. As you can imagine, the negotiation process began after that on our initiative. The negotiation process was not going so smoothly. The main reason for this was that at that time Armenia wanted to include a provision on Karabakh in the peace treaty. However, this is an issue that does not fit into any logic. It is an issue that has no legal or political basis.

"We were trying to explain to the Armenian side that this is our internal matter and that the internal affairs of any country cannot be included in an intergovernmental agreement. However, Armenia stubbornly refused to back down from its position. After that, Brussels meetings were held at the initiative of the President of the EU Council. However, the main fundamental issue still prevented the parties from reaching an agreement on this issue. Only after the 2023 anti-terrorist operation did Armenia have to come to terms with the realities. After that, an active negotiation process began. And for several months now, the parties have been declaring that all the articles of the peace agreement have already been agreed upon. This is a very important historical issue for the South Caucasus," the President noted.
