Azerbaijan, ICAO discuss progress in Aktau plane crash investigation

In Paris, a meeting was held between a delegation led by Elmin Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, and Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and Nicolas Rallo, Regional Director of ICAO’s European and North Atlantic Office, the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport (MDDT) told APA-Economics.

The meeting discussed the progress of investigations related to the crash of the “Azerbaijan Airlines” Embraer 190 aircraft on December 25, 2024. Additionally, there was an exchange of views on aviation safety, flight security, training of aviation specialists, enhancing their knowledge and skills, as well as ongoing measures aimed at improving the activities of the regulatory body in the country in accordance with international standards, and plans intended to develop bilateral cooperation.

ICAO representatives, noting that investigating aviation accidents is a priority, emphasized the necessity of Azerbaijan’s relevant support in this field. The parties underlined the importance of conducting civil aviation flights in full compliance with all safety standards.

The meeting highlighted the importance of implementing training programs to improve regulation in the areas of aviation and flight safety, support effective state supervision, and ensure full compliance with ICAO standards. In addition, it was agreed to pay special attention to partnership in capacity building through experts appointed under ICAO’s technical assistance programs in various fields. Continuation of bilateral cooperation through ICAO’s Capacity Development and Implementation (CDI) Bureau was decided.

The parties agreed to expand cooperation between ICAO, the State Civil Aviation Agency, and operators of the Republic of Azerbaijan in various directions. The Azerbaijani side once again confirmed its commitment to supporting joint activities with ICAO in the global application of international standards in flight safety, aviation security, and environmental protection.
