Azerbaijan has the highest divorce rate in 85 years – One of the highest in Europe


In January-February of this year, 3,376 divorces were registered in Azerbaijan.

For reference, the highest divorce rate in Azerbaijan over the past 85 years, that is, since 1941, was recorded in 2023-2024. During these years, the divorce rate per 1,000 population was 2.1. In 2025, this figure dropped slightly to 2.
It should also be noted that, with the exception of 2023-2024, this figure was last recorded in 1990. Thus, in 1990, the divorce rate per 1,000 population was 2, and such a high figure was not recorded until 2023.
The lowest divorce rate over the past 85 years was recorded in 1945. That year, the divorce rate per 1,000 population in the country was only 0.1. Between 1945 and 1965, this figure did not exceed 1.
The lowest divorce rate since Azerbaijan's independence was recorded in 1999. That year, the divorce rate per 1,000 population was 0.6.
It should also be noted that, according to the latest data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), the divorce rate per 1,000 population in the European Union was 1.6 and remained unchanged over the past three years – 2022, 2023, 2024.
