New Caledonia independence supporters reject Boujival agreement, which does not include a referendum

On August 13, the Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) of New Caledonia confirmed that it has rejected the Bougainville Agreement signed with the government and pro-independence supporters in early July, APA reports, citing  Le Monde.

The decision to withdraw from the agreement, which envisages the creation of the state of New Caledonia, was made during an extraordinary congress of the FLNKS on Saturday and confirmed at a press conference held in Nouméa on Wednesday.

Dominique Fochi, Secretary General of the Caledonian Union and member of the FLNKS Political Bureau, stated that FLNKS "formally rejects the Bougainville Agreement draft because it does not align with the foundations and achievements of our struggle."

Note that the text particularly envisions the creation of a “State of New Caledonia” and Caledonian citizenship, as well as the possibility of transferring sovereign powers (currency, justice, police). However, it does not foresee the holding of a new referendum on independence, which has triggered a backlash among pro-independence supporters.
