Syrian and Israeli representatives to meet in Baku: Media

Next Thursday, a security meeting between Syria and Israel will be held in Baku, APA reports citing, Sky News Arabia.

The U.S. publication Axios also reported that Israel has presented Syria with a draft of a new security agreement.

The draft envisions special divisions in the southwest direction from Damascus to the Israeli border.

According to two sources, this plan is based on the peace agreement signed between Israel and Egypt in 1979. That document divided the Sinai Peninsula into “A, B, C” zones, establishing different security regimes and levels of armament.

Under the new proposal, the area from southwest of Damascus to the Israeli border will be divided into three zones. In each zone, Syria will be allowed to keep a certain number of military forces and weapons. The document also envisions extending the buffer zone on the Syrian side by an additional 2 kilometers.

In return, Israel has proposed to gradually withdraw from Syrian territories.

However, Israel insists on maintaining its positions on the strategically important peak of Mount Sheikh.
