The Presidential Order on declaring 2026 the “Year of Urban Planning and Architecture” in Azerbaijan is based on deep historical roots, Ilgar Isbatov, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture, told journalists, APA-Economics reports.
He noted that Azerbaijan is a country that has made great contributions to the world in both urban planning and architecture:
“There are monuments on the territory of our country such as Icherisheher, the Maiden Tower, and the Shirvanshahs’ Palace Complex, which are included in the World Heritage List. In addition, the city of Sheki is also on the verge of being included in that list. Azerbaijan has been one of the regions where the art of urban planning and architecture was formed and developed since ancient times. Ancient architectural schools existed here, and these works were successfully continued in subsequent stages of history. Especially during the periods when National Leader Heydar Aliyev led Azerbaijan, significant changes in line with the requirements of the modern era were implemented in this field, and the process was carried out in a systematic manner. A fundamental transformation was achieved in the planning of our cities and villages. To ensure the continuity and consistency of these efforts, institutional frameworks were established.”
