Réunion issue under French rule raised at international forum in Baku

The continued governance of Réunion Island by France in the 21st century is unacceptable, said Katambara Roman Yoakim, a participant of the international Youth Forum titled “Strengthening the role of youth in the post-colonial period,” held in Baku, APA reports.

“I am from Réunion Island, and this island is still a colony of France. Therefore, the struggle of our youth is very important. This is a matter of dignity for our people. Taking our destiny into our own hands means determining our economic, political, and education system ourselves. It is unacceptable that Réunion is still governed by France in the 21st century. Because Mauritius (1968), Seychelles (1976), Comoros (1975) and Madagascar (1960) in our region have already become independent states. But in 2026, Réunion still remains politically, economically and culturally subordinate to the French state,” the participant said.
