The meeting with President Trump will open a new page in our relations, President Ilham Aliyev said in an interview with the media regarding the results of his visit to the US, APA reports.
The head of state said that the meeting with President Trump was result-oriented: “I met Mr. Trump during his previous presidency. Our relationship with Trump and his team was always positive. We supported him in the US elections last year. Trump is loyal to family values. He has done things that seemed impossible in Asia, Africa, and the South Caucasus. This person shows real results. From this perspective, I hope that the relations between our countries will move in a positive direction. At the same time, the fact that Trump repealed the unfair “907th Amendment” in his office with my participation is very symbolic."
He could have done it in a different format, and then signed it, but he decided to do it with my participation: "This was an unfair sanction against Azerbaijan by Congress in 1992. Congressmen were unaware of the situation in the South Caucasus. Armenia influenced them through lobby groups. At that time, Azerbaijan was presented as an “aggressor”. This directly prevented us from receiving US support deprived. Of course, it was a complicated situation. Azerbaijan supported the US government in Afghanistan. After that, this amendment was temporarily suspended by the US government until 2023. But we did not expect the Biden Administration to restore the “907 Amendment” again in 2023. This was shocking for us. In other words, when we were not needed in Afghanistan, the Biden Administration actually fled Afghanistan in front of the whole world and then again imposed sanctions on Azerbaijan related to the “907 Amendment”. This was the culmination of this negative approach. This had a very negative impact on our relations with the Biden Administration. Until the end of this Administration, our relations remained the same. Our relations were in crisis. Therefore, Trump’s gesture today has great meaning for us. Of course, Azerbaijan does not need foreign aid or support today, our economy is stable, our state’s foreign debt is less than 7% of GDP. Therefore, the cancellation of this amendment is symbolic for us and the elimination of injustice against us "This amendment has now been removed, justice has been restored. This is also a political gesture for us."
