Elchin Amirbayov: Armenia must take concrete steps to sign peace agreement

The initialing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia took place in Washington on August 8, marking a significant step towards the normalization of relations between the two countries, said Ambassador Elchin Amirbayov, Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Special Assignments, in an interview with the French editorial office of the I24 News TV channel, APA reports.

Elchin Amirbayov noted that at this stage, it is only about initialing, not final signing: “Thus, the Armenian side still needs to take concrete steps to sign and implement the peace agreement. In particular, there are still provisions in the Armenian Constitution that contradict the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and express unacceptable territorial claims. Therefore, in order to establish lasting peace, the fundamental law of Armenia must be brought into line with the text and spirit of the peace agreement already initialed by both countries.

Nevertheless, the initialing of the agreement is a great step forward in itself. This is the result of a constructive dialogue conducted in a bilateral format, the political will of both sides, and, of course, the constructive support of a number of international partners. In particular, we highly appreciate the personal contribution and efforts of US President Donald Trump. If this process continues seriously and resolutely, a new page based on cooperation, stability, and common prosperity can be opened in the history of the South Caucasus.”
