Alaska Summit: Putin must keep his promises to Trump, otherwise he may face serious problems -ANALYSIS

The summit between the leaders of the United States and Russia in Alaska on August 15, 2025, dominated the world agenda. Against the backdrop of years of mutual accusations, sanctions, and regional conflicts, the fact that the leaders of the two countries sat down at the same table can be considered an important step towards dialogue.

The Alaska Summit went as expected

Given that the strategic differences between the US and Russia are still quite deep, and that the war in Ukraine, energy security, NATO expansion, and mutual sanctions have strained relations, it would be naive to expect a final and important decision to be made during the first meeting. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said before the meeting that “the summit does not envisage signing any documents, the main goal is the beginning of dialogue.” This statement revealed the real essence of the summit in terms of the parties expressing their positions openly, listening to each other, and determining the directions of future dialogue.

The Alaska meeting can also be characterized as the "beginning of a roadmap." It showed that the parties were ready for an open dialogue with each other, restoring at least some level of trust. The US side views the summit as the beginning of a diplomatic phase that could influence the peace process in Ukraine. Russia, on the other hand, is looking for new opportunities to both ease economic sanctions and reduce international isolation.

This meeting between Trump and Putin, held after four years, was also of special symbolic importance. The last such meeting took place in Helsinki in 2018. Therefore, the Alaska Summit was remembered not only for its position statements, but also for the restoration of high-level contacts. The fact that the leaders of the two nuclear powers did not abandon dialogue, but, on the contrary, demonstrated their readiness to rebuild relations, was a hopeful message for the international community.

Trump takes away Putin's excuses one by one

Trump

Before the summit, US President Donald Trump's statement that "if the meeting does not produce the results I want, I will leave it early" attracted the attention of the international community. This once again demonstrated his tough style and result-oriented policy. However, Trump continued the meeting to the end, participating in the press conference. This fact indicates that Washington received certain positive signals from Moscow, and at the same time confirms that at least a preliminary basis for understanding has been formed between the parties.

Trump's statement after the summit was also noteworthy: "My main goal is to achieve peace in Ukraine. We agreed with Putin on most issues, only a few issues are still being discussed." This statement reveals that the meeting was not a purely formal protocol, but, on the contrary, real and concrete results were achieved.

At the same time, Trump's words "my main goal is to achieve peace in Ukraine" clearly express both the strategic course of the United States and determine the priority direction of the summit. This is not limited to the regulation of bilateral relations, but has the character of a message about the future of the security architecture in Europe as a whole.

Trump's stay at the table until the end can be explained by his feeling that Moscow was ready for a compromise. If the negotiations had been completely fruitless, the US President would have undoubtedly left the process unfinished. This point shows that the Alaska Summit was an important stage for both sides, both psychologically and politically.

Trump's position, statements and diplomatic gestures showed that it would be wrong to treat the Alaska meeting as a mere symbolic event, the summit played the role of a platform that laid the groundwork for certain agreements and future negotiations. This step by Trump shows how principled he is in resolving the Ukrainian issue. It should not be overlooked that the initiator of the Summit is the US leader. By making this proposal to Putin, Trump is politically masterfully taking away his last opportunity to evade the resolution of the conflict. It is clear that Russia has not been keen on stopping the war in Ukraine for a long time and has been avoiding dialogue under various pretexts. However, given Trump's insistence, Putin had no choice but to attend this summit. Otherwise, he would have revealed his true intentions. In addition, it can be said that Putin himself has certain intentions in attending the summit. These intentions of Russia include easing sanctions, reducing pressure, etc.

Why did he soften Putin's rhetoric?

Who's

One of the highlights of the summit was Vladimir Putin’s softer rhetoric. His words, “We consider the Ukrainian people a brotherly people and we want the conflict to end soon,” were not taken seriously by most people, of course. They were more like flattery to Trump. With these words, Putin was supposedly demonstrating his willingness to negotiate, thereby trying to score some points.

His invitation to Trump to Moscow and a lot of meaning can be found on his “a new stage can begin on the basis of mutual respect and equality” emphasis.

This should be seen as an important political message that Moscow does not intend to completely break off relations with Washington, but rather to avoid it, and also as an intention to obtain a reprieve from pressure and sanctions. No matter how positive Trump may sound about Putin, the continuation of the processes may lead to serious consequences. Much depends on the position that Russia will demonstrate. Putin must also show in practice how sincere and consistent he is in the ideas he voiced at the summit. He must keep his promises to Trump, the statements he made at the summit and at the press conference after the summit. The world has witnessed many such games by Moscow. However, Trump is an experienced, principled and strong leader. The Kremlin's withdrawal from its statements, the intention to buy time with the ideas he voiced at the summit, and playing games with Trump may end with grave consequences for Russia.

Europe's reaction and the regional context

The summit also sparked wide-ranging discussions within the European Union. European experts believed that the resumption of dialogue between the United States and Russia could have a direct impact on the continent's security architecture. Because the Ukrainian crisis had become the biggest security challenge for Europe. At the same time, the timing of the meeting was not accidental. The summit took place just seven days after the US President's meeting with Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev in Washington. This fact demonstrated the US's efforts to increase its diplomatic activity in the post-Soviet space and its intention to play a more influential role in regional politics.

The real essence of the Alaska Summit was to open the door to dialogue, restore mutual trust and form the basis for future agreements. And based on the results of the meeting, it can be said that this result was achieved. In the words of Trump: “This is just the beginning. We must continue to meet, because peace is in the interest of the whole world.” Thus, although the Alaska Summit did not immediately end the war in Ukraine, it marked the beginning of a new stage in US-Russian relations. The meeting is assessed as a positive step towards peace and stability in international politics. This step gave hope to both the parties and the international community that further negotiations will continue and more constructive results will be achieved. Much depends on how interested and sincere Russia is in the dialogue.

The eyes of the world are now focused on the new meetings that will be held in the wake of the Alaska Summit
