6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Caspian Sea near Baku

A very strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred in the Caspian Sea 81 km (50 mi) from DagestanRussia, late in the evening of Tuesday.

The quake had a very shallow depth of 11 km (7 mi) and was felt widely in the area.

The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.
