Azerbaijan and Türkiye will provide mutual military assistance to each other in the event that either country is subjected to armed aggression, APA reports.
This is reflected in the “Memorandum of Understanding on Strengthening Mutual Military Security between the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Türkiye,” approved by President Ilham Aliyev.
The document consists of eight articles.
Under the agreement, the parties undertake to provide mutual assistance to one another in the event that one of them is subjected to armed aggression, in order to exercise the right of individual and collective self-defence as recognized by Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
The provision of military assistance by the parties to each other shall be carried out at the request of one of them and in accordance with the procedures established under their respective national legislation. In peacetime, the parties regularly conduct joint military exercises and maneuvers as outlined above.
The Memorandum covers only issues in the field of military cooperation and military security and, within this framework, envisages only mutual assistance in the defense sphere, training, supply, and the enhancement of the parties’ joint operational capabilities.
In accordance with their national legislation, the parties strengthen information exchange and military intelligence cooperation in the military sphere; accordingly, they may share information obtained in the field of military security (classified, top secret, special importance) with each other and use such information during joint operations.
Any disagreements arising between the parties regarding the interpretation or implementation of this Memorandum shall be resolved exclusively through negotiations and consultations between the parties.
Amendments or additions to the Memorandum of Understanding may be made at any time on the basis of the parties’ mutual written consent.
