Erdoğan: Peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan will change atmosphere in region

The Zangezur corridor will create new opportunities not only for Azerbaijan but for the entire region, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told journalists following his visit to Azerbaijan, APA’s Istanbul correspondent reports.

He noted that Türkiye views the corridor not only as a geopolitical project but also as part of a geo-economic transformation.

"The opening of the Zangezur corridor will be a strategic step for the Middle Corridor. Once the corridor is operational, Turkish goods will reach Central Asia and China more quickly via the Caspian Sea, and goods from Europe to China will begin to pass through Türkiye. The opening of the Middle Corridor covers many countries from the south to us and Azerbaijan. In addition, it is integrated with the route coming from China. This is its importance. We are taking every step in this process in the best possible way. The most important element here is the Zangezur line, which also includes a railway system. Therefore, the Zangezur line is becoming increasingly important for cargo transportation," he emphasized.

Erdoğan also underlined that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attaches great importance to this issue.

Erdoğan added that the opening of the Zangezur corridor will enhance the efficiency of Türkiye’s Kars-Igdır-Nakhchivan railway line and construction investments in Karabakh.

"The world is changing, and this makes it necessary to take new steps. Keeping pace with these changes means activating potential and opening doors to new gains. The peace to be achieved between Armenia and Azerbaijan will change the atmosphere in the region. With the reconciliation, we will witness the opening of new and historic windows of opportunity one after another. As the potential of areas left vacant due to conflicts and wars becomes active, another rare example of a winning model will emerge."
