Azerbaijan enhances water resources assessment and forecasting system

Azerbaijan has launched comprehensive hydrological and hydrogeological research aimed at improving the country’s water resources assessment and forecasting system, Azernews reports.

The Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ADSEA) reported that preliminary work has been completed to establish a hydrological database, which will include detailed information on rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Data from the National Hydrometeorological Service is currently being transferred to the State Supervision Service for the Use and Protection of Rivers, and electronic hydrological records are being prepared for analysis.

The database has been developed through a dedicated portal and will eventually be integrated into ADSEA’s existing and planned GIS-based software. In addition, proposals have been prepared to ensure complex hydrological studies, based on analyses of prior observations and the hydrological regime network.

To re-evaluate the reserves of underground and surface water bodies and aquifers, analyses were conducted using materials from the State Geological Information Fund, and design and estimate documents have been compiled accordingly.

In line with the President’s October 2024 directive, the Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communication prepared a certificate monitoring the implementation of the “National Strategy for the Efficient Use of Water Resources” for the 1st and 2nd quarters of 2025, including the 4th quarter of 2024. The certificate reflects completed and ongoing work under the strategy, with similar updates to be presented publicly in future quarters.
