Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan has expressed confidence that the border with Azerbaijan will be opened, APA’s correspondent assigned to Davos reports.
Speaking at the panel discussion titled “Defining Eurasia’s Economic Identity,” held within the framework of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, Khachaturyan said success would be achieved because the agreements are very concrete. “The principles are very clear in terms of respecting each other’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and jurisdiction. We will be guided by these principles. We will open the borders. I am confident that in a few years this will become a normal situation not only at the highest political level, but also when citizens of Armenia and Azerbaijan cross the border, do business with each other, and benefit from one another,” the Armenian President said.
Khachaturyan added that as a result of cooperation, the South Caucasus would become a highly favorable region for the entire world. “The best route between Europe and Asia runs through the South Caucasus. This process will succeed because there is not only political but also economic interest. I would like to thank President Ilham Aliyev and our Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan—both of them—for their political will. The process was delayed for 30 years; negotiations were held but yielded no results. Only when the leaders of the two countries agree on principles, on general principles, can we succeed. I must also highlight the role of U.S. President Donald Trump, who was able to take responsibility and organize the signing of this historic document on August 8,” he said.
