Planned railway, metro, and tram projects for passenger transportation in Baku announced

Work planned in the fields of railway, metro, and tram transport for passenger transportation in Baku has been announced, said Head of AYNA’s Baku Regional Department, Tarlan Safarov, during an event dedicated to the Master Plan of Baku held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

“When speaking about active projects, we always pay special attention to the city bus transport system. We have achieved significant progress in this direction. Currently, 368 green energy-powered buses operate on our streets, and 114 kilometers of bus lanes have been constructed. As a direct result, our daily active bus fleet has increased by 30 percent, and 2,300 buses are deployed on routes every day. Within the framework of this expansion, approximately 500 million passengers are currently transported annually.

To support mobility growth, the regional railway network is also being expanded to serve surrounding suburban areas. New railway lines are planned to connect Bilgah, Pirshaghi, Sumgayit, and other settlements with central Baku for passenger transportation. To support the development of this network, the purchase of 29 modern passenger trains is planned.

The metro network, which is a high-capacity underground transport system, is also being optimized. Ten new metro stations are being designed and planned to improve urban accessibility. In addition, the separation of the Green and Red lines at the ‘28 May’ central hub is envisaged to ensure the network operates with maximum frequency and safety. This innovation will fully solve one of the city’s biggest transport interchange problems.

At the same time, light rail transport systems are also being reintroduced into Baku’s urban transport system. These modern tram lines will be used in high-density corridors such as from ‘Memar Ajami’ to ‘28 May.’ We are building an integrated transport system that will ensure all these networks operate together.

We no longer evaluate highways, the metro, railways, and other modes of transport as separate systems. Our goal is to combine all these networks into a unified digital and physical ecosystem. We believe this integrated transport system will reduce travel time and increase accessibility for all passengers,” he noted.
