Media: Putin agrees to a ceasefire for first time to hold referendums on territories

Russia has agreed to a ceasefire for the first time before a final peace agreement is signed, and has seen it as a necessary step towards a political settlement, Axios writes, citing sources, APA reports.

According to senior U.S. officials, Russia has accepted the ceasefire as a necessary condition for subsequent political steps, including the possible holding of a referendum on the fate of disputed territories. This indicates that the Kremlin is backing down from its previous position. Moscow had previously stated that a ceasefire was possible only after a final peace agreement.

“Russians who previously opposed the ceasefire now admit that further steps are impossible without it,” a US official said.

According to reports, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr ZelenskYy are planning to meet on Sunday at Mar-a-Lago. The purpose of the meeting is to finalize the US peace plan for the war in Ukraine.

It was noted that this meeting indicates significant progress in the negotiations. Trump had previously said he would only agree to a personal meeting with ZelenskYy when a deal was close to being finalized.
